It all started with a post on a yard sale site on facebook. Minutes later I had several comments and about 5 new cake orders. I was advised to make sure I don't take on more than I can handle to which I replied "They're all spread out.. no worries" In spite of this; last week wound up being my busiest one yet in my cake world. A baby shower cake, two sheet cakes, and a two tier birthday cake all in the span of 2 Days! Then a couple days later I had a request for a Birthday cake that I cranked out in a couple hrs. from start to finish. Thank goodness for my supportive boyfriend and children or I'd have been a basket case. They all turned out perfect. I'm loving the requests I've been getting. Coming up I have a spider man to do, a Skylander Birthday cake, a minion Birthday cake, and a Three tier Girly Birthday cake designed by my daughter and me. I'm so excited!! |

Yeah! Another commission! I'll be doing a Skate Board cake this week too. This one is going to be loads of fun! I think I'll use doughnuts for the wheels on the cake. I can hardly wait to get started. There's just something about getting in the zone when I make a cake that is both stressful and relaxing at the same time. plus of coarse when I'm all done I stand back and look at what I've accomplished. Each one is a new adventure. What a busy week this is turning out to be.. sports physical, softball tryouts, cake, Zoo, Swimming... at least I won't be board.
So cake baking is getting more and more fun.. I made one that looked like a watermelon for a family event and Jim helped. He seems to enjoy helping me think through how to make my cakes even more awesome. My next cake commission is for a baby shower. It's going to be a baby bump cake with a little baby foot pushing on the mommies belly. I've already spent more than what I'm charging on tools etc. but if I'm gonna do this I need the right tools to do the job. I've found that I like working with fondant so next I'm going to try out learning to work with gum paste for doing things like flowers.. The day after that is our first Birthday of three in a row for the kids. In August it'll be a T.M.N.T cake. Sept and Oct. to be determined... I think it's time to start checking into teaching myself to do more....
So I've been watching a lot of CAKE BOSS on Netflix and I caved. I used to think that Fondant was just yucky and why would you use the stuff.. Well, with the right recipe it tastes good. This minion was my first try and I learned a lot. It's not as easy as it could be with the correct tools, but it's fun and very worth the effort. I'm certainly not gonna quit the traditional, but I've already tried Cake number 2 using fondant and it turned out even better.. I'm definitely a new believer.. :-) Starting a new business is so exciting! My business cards came in and they are exactly what I ordered. My first two customers were extremely happy with the job I did for them. I have really been enjoying the creative freedom this gives me. When a customer tells me what the want and I can deliver just that it's very rewarding. This Rubik's Cube was a really fun cake to make. The young man it was for is so good with them he can solve one in under 5 minutes. So, when asked to make a Rubik's Cube I decided that it should be one that was already solved. After all, if it hadn't been solved already, he might have felt the need to solve his cake. That certainly would have made a mess.
I've also found, doing this, that an I pad can come in really handy. When you're creating something like this, being able to see a pic. of the real thing takes a lot of the work out of it. I don't know how we ever survived without technology..... It's official! I'm being hired to make a wedding cake this time. My first tasting went well and it's on to the contract. yeah! My bride is going with a 3 layer wedding cake and it's going to be FABULOUS! Ribbon on the bottom of each layer, paisley designs on the sides and flowers on top to match the bouquets! I'm so excited. It's going to be a beautiful cake
10-7-13 Well My Purple and Green Paisley Wedding cake turned out wonderfully! Two days of baking and decorating paid off! I made a huge mess of my kitchen and didn't clean it up til yesterday and even then I had help from a sweet teen from my church. She has no idea what a blessing she was in helping me with all those dishes! Any-who, I digress. I heard from the Bride today and she was pleased as punch so I'm absolutely thrilled! A happy bride makes all that work even more rewarding to do! So the cake didn't really wind up being a two person job. I was extremely nervous doing my first wedding cake for my sister. I was worried that after all our planning and shopping that it wouldn't be right or that something would happen to it. Luckily that was not the case. We shopped for the butterflies to put on together and when my sister saw her wedding cake when she arrived at the reception she said "It's so me!" We both nearly cried. Needless to say; my first wedding cake was a success. Can't wait to do another one!
Well here goes. My big sister is getting re-married in May. We've decided to do her wedding cake together. This should be an advanture for both of us. We have a plan in mind and I've been watching videos that should help me. Now I just have to find the best place to purchase the right cake pans for my money. Quality for a reasonable price is difficult sometimes these days. It's a shame it's not yard sale season. I've also gotta try out fondont. We're not using it on the cake, but I'm thinking that if I try my recipe and it works well and tastes good that the beautiful bride ight let me talk her into using it for the butterfly embelishments. We'll see... I'm certainly excited about this new adventure!
Over Christmas break I was pleasantly surprised with a visit from my oldest brother and his family who lives in NC. We had a lovely visit. Come to find out, however, that my nephew turned 19 the day they were traveling and he hadn't had any Birthday Cake yet. This of course is unacceptable, so I made him one. Lucky for me I had some icing on hand already. I had fun making it and it turned out kinda cool if I do say so myself.
